Ray St. Pierre, longtime JPPSS Educator and Board Member dies

For the last 19 years, Ray St. Pierre has served the students of Jefferson Parish as a dedicated member of the Jefferson Parish School Board. On Sunday, July 29th Mr. St. Pierre, known as ‘Coach’ to many passed away after battling cancer. He leaves behind his loving wife Joyce with and a caring family of sons and grandchildren.

Ray St. Pierre grew up on the west bank of Jefferson Parish and was a product of the Jefferson Parish Public School System. Ray earned a master’s degree in education.

Coach started his teaching career in Texas after serving in the United States Armed Forces. Sports would lure him back to Louisiana where he relocated his family and begin a career in education that spanned more than 40 years. In 1985, he coached the John Ehret football team to a state title. Many of his former students and athletes remained in contact with Coach St. Pierre well beyond their days in the classroom or on the football field.

In 1998, Ray was elected to the Jefferson Parish School Board. In December 2004, JPPSS board members elected Ray St. Pierre as president of the board. Coach St. Pierre brought his drive for establishing excellence in every school to the Jefferson Parish Public Schools. Under his administration, JPPSS achieved new highs in academic test scores.

Respected by many and remembered by anyone he came into contact with, Ray was a straight shooter that never left his position unknown. He was a staunch advocate for equality of all students. Always accessible and willing to lend a listening ear. Ray St. Pierre will be missed by those who had the pleasure to know him.
