Judge Lionel Collins, Sr. Post Office Dedication in Marrero

President Obama signed into law house Resolution 2458 to formally dedicate the Marrero Post Office located at 5351 Lapalco Boulevard as the “Lionel R. Collins, Sr. Post Office Building.”

Judge Collins served on the bench in the 24th Judicial District Court in Gretna and was the first African American elected to Public Office in Jefferson Parish. Judge Collins made meaningful impacts that advanced equality, justice, health care and access to quality educationsThe dedication ceremony took place on October 21, 2016, at 9:30 a.m., at the 5351 Lapalco Boulevard location. It is free and open to the public.

The Honorable Mark D. Spears, Jr. of Council District 3 stated “the Honorable Lionel Collins who’s roots began in Harvey, Louisiana is a testament to the accomplishments that one person can make in the lives of many.”

In 1977 in Jefferson Parish, Judge Lionel R. Collins, Sr. was the first and only African American ever elected to a parish-wide office in any election, and it is still true, even to this day.
