Chalmette National Cemetery Tour

Walk the national cemetery to discover its history and the stories of some of the thousands buried there. Meet at front porch of old cemetery superintendent’s lodge (two-story brick building just inside cemetery gate). 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays through May 21. 1:30 p.m. ONLY on Sunday, May 28, ONLY. Volunteers are needed to place and remove American flags at all 14,000+ headstones. Flags are placed beginning at 7:30am on Friday, May 26, and are picked up and prepared for storage beginning at 7:30am on Tuesday, May 30. Projects usually take about three hours and require walking and bending over in possibly hot, humid, and buggy conditions (preparing flags for storage also requires sitting and rolling flags). Be prepared with sunscreen, insect repellent, and closed-toe shoes. To volunteer for either or both projects, email gaynell1_brady@nps.gov. Free.
Memorial Day Ceremony – Vietnam Veterans of VFW Post 3798 present a tribute to America’s fallen troops; ceremony includes a color guard and bagpiper on Sunday, May 28th at 12:30pm. Free.

Walk the Wetlands

Explore Louisiana swamp and marsh on a ranger-guided walk 10:00 a.m. Wednesday-Sunday. Free. Barataria Preserve of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, 6588 Barataria Blvd. in Marrero (near Crown Point). 689-3690 ext 10 or www.nps.gov/jela.

  • Tuesday, May 9th – Saturday, May 13th (9am to 4:30pm) Photography exhibit “Losing Ground” shares the work of artist Cate Colvin Sampson as part of a city-wide art event designed to bring awareness to Louisiana coastal land loss. Free.
  • Saturday, May 13th (2:00pm to 3:00pm) Join a ranger to discuss the consequences of human attempts to control Louisiana’s environment. Free.
