Enjoying Dominican Cuisine at Mangú

I’m always up for an adventurous eating experience and trying food that I have never had before, so when I heard that a Dominican restaurant was opening up in Gretna, I couldn’t wait to try it. Mangú, located at 2112 Belle Chasse Hwy., Suite 7 is serving up Caribbean food with a modern twist.

After hearing raves about the place, I decided to try Mangú for myself. I arrived early since I heard that the restaurant is small and there can be a bit of a wait. I lucked out- there was a good crowd, but still a few free tables. Since I’m not really familiar with Dominican food, I peaked at the menu online and did a little research before I arrived.  I decided to get the Mofongo: fried plantains with salt, garlic, olive oil and pork cracklins served with shrimp. Once the food arrived, I was really impressed by how much food they give you- a big molded stack of mashed plantains was topped with a generous amount of shrimp and a delicious sauce. I was more than happy to dig in and I was overwhelmed by the incredible flavors of the dish. The plantains were perfectly cooked and the pork cracklins were nice and soft. The tail-off shrimp were a perfect addition to the dish and I loved all of it. This dish was so good that it makes me want to go back with a big group, order a lot of different things and sample a little bit of everything.

No matter what you’re in the mood for, Mangú is sure to satisfy your craving. Their menu includes classics such as platano chips -green plantains that are sliced thin and fried to a golden brown, empenadas stuffed with your choice of meat, tostadas and bolas de yuca -cheese stuffed deep fried yuca balls. Some Dominican classics include Yaros -a bed of French fries or fried plantains smothered in roasted pork thigh and topped with melted cheese and Bandeja Frita, fried pork, cheese, sausage, cracklins and green plantains. Daily specials include Mondongo- tripe stew served with rice or fried green plantains, Bacalo- cod fish sautéed in criollo salsa and served with Mangú Tradicional, rice and beans, moro, fried green plantains or salad, and Pescado Entero Frito -whole fried snapper served with fried green plantains and a small salad. There are also vegetarian options available, if you are in the mood for something a little lighter.

Mangú is open Tuesday through Thursday 11:00 am to 8:00 pm, Friday and Saturday 11:00 am to 9:00 pm, and Sunday 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. Mangú is closed on Mondays. For more information call 324-9870 or visit letsmangu.com.
