Churches Prepare for St. Joseph’s Altars

Churches and organizations on the West Bank are busy preparing their St. Joseph’s Day altars. St. Joseph’s Day, also known as the Feast of St. Joseph or Solemnity of St. Joseph, is Sunday, March 19th, and recognizes Joseph, spouse of the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus. St. Joseph’s Day altars typically include breads, cookies and other sweets, candles, bottles of wine, prayer cards and other mementos, flowers, and statuettes of the blessed family.

This year, because St. Joseph’s Day falls on a Sunday, the St. Joseph’s altar will be open on Saturday, March 18th, at Jerome Hall. Beginning in mid-January, dozens of church workers began the process or preparing for the parish’s altar, working from a cookbook of special recipes.  Visitors can expect dozens of items will be served, including items ranging from casseroles and spaghetti with meatless gravy to cookies, cakes, and breads. All events and eating from the altar are free, but donations are graciously accepted.

It is estimated that the event will feed 3,500 to 4,000 visitors, and more than 50 volunteers work to organize and prepare the altar. Numerous area businesses and individuals contribute money or groceries for the event to occur.
