Keep your generator running with Air Cooled Engines

It’s the time of year when we have to start paying close attention to what the weather is doing, because hurricanes pose a constant threat to our area. While we can’t control the weather, we can prepare for it by adding a generator to our home or business, so that we have a dependable power source in the event of an emergency. This is an easy step to take in order to add a little piece of mind to an otherwise stressful situation. The folks at Air Cooled Engines, located at 2520 4th St. in Harvey, can take care of any generator needs that you might have.

Family owned and operated since 1977, Air Cooled Engines services residential and portable generator sets, as well as large commercial sets used by fire departments, grocery stores and communications companies. They are the largest dealer stocking locally for parts of major name brand generators and they offer home standby generators- Briggs and Stratton, Generac, and Kohler. They provide sales and service and assist customers in working with licensed plumbers and electricians to have their units installed and, once installed, they provide maintenance and service to keep the generator in optimum performance.

One way to maintain portable units is to drain the carburetor dry of all fuel prior to storage. Today’s fuel is volatile and should not be stored for more than 30 days. Shutting off the fuel and letting the unit run until it dies helps ensure that the carburetor does not get gummed up with old fuel. Running the units periodically also helps to maintain the units working order. One of the worst things for equipment is lack of use, so what’s recommended is pulling it out once a month and letting the unit run for a while to lubricate seals and flush particulates out of the carburetor ports. Individuals with home standby generators should be hearing their units exercise on a weekly basis and units should be serviced yearly, regardless of any major power outages. In the case of a major power outage, it’s good to service the units every 100-150 hours.

Air Cooled Engines is ready to serve you Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. They offer on-site service for local home standby generators and in-shop service for portable and RV generators. Their techs are certified to provide you the best service possible, so stop in any time if you have questions or are in need of service. Please call 362-6877 for more information.
