Summer Fun at Bayou Segnette

If you’re looking for something a little different this summer, it might be time to have an adventure at Bayou Segnette State Park. Located at 7777 Westbank Expressway in Westwego, this beautiful state park is only a 30-minute drive from New Orleans and offers a wide variety of outdoor adventures for the whole family to enjoy.

Here you will find boating, fishing, camping, canoeing, hiking, picnicking, playgrounds and a gorgeous wave pool for swimming. The vast ecosystem offers you the chance to spot plants, trees and wildlife from both swamps and marshland.

Fishing is a favorite at Bayou Segnette, and because of the park’s location, both freshwater and saltwater fishing is enjoyed by visitors; bass, catfish, bream, perch, redfish, and trout are common to the waters here. There are picnic areas available and shelters, if you are hosting a big group. If you’re interested in camping overnight, accommodations include 16 deluxe cabins, 80-person capacity group camp and 98 campsites. Deluxe cabins are $150 a night, Sunday through Thursday and $175 a night, Friday through Saturday. 16 cabins are available, 2 are ADA compliant; sleeps up to 8 people with 1 queen bed, 2 bunk beds and 1 sofa sleeper. There are also 98 premium campsites available starting at $30 a night for April through September. Also, beginning in May, the WEGO cookers, a chapter of the Louisiana Dutch Oven Society, will be demonstrating Dutch Oven cooking techniques every third Saturday of the month. There is also a sampling.

One of the most popular features of the park is the wave pool, which opens Memorial Day weekend. The pool is on a “first come, first served” basis and has certified lifeguards on duty. Free tubes are provided and life jackets are available for rent. Concessions are for sale in the pool area and lockers are available for rent, as well. Admission for people over 4 feet tall is $10 and under 4 feet tall is $8. The pool is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm until Labor Day.

Whether you are looking to spend a few nights in the great outdoors, interested in exploring your own backyard and seeing what our environment has to offer or looking to cool down on some of the hottest days of the year, Bayou Segnette is sure to add a splash of fun to your summer plans. Bayou Segnette State Park’s hours are 7:00 am to 10:00 pm and you can call 736-7140 for more information about what the park has to offer.
