Cooling off with Summer Snowballs

On a hot summer day, nothing is better than a cool treat. Whether you find yourself on the Westbank or the Eastbank when the craving hits, here are some stands that are sure to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Van’s Snowballs

Located at 4811 General Meyer in Algiers, Van’s has been serving up snowballs, ice cream and frozen yogurt since 1976. Van’s Snowballs is open 365 days a year, so you can satisfy your snowball craving any time, no matter what the temperature is outside. Among Van’s most beloved flavors are Peach Melba, Cherry Chocolate, and Tulane Green Wave. This New Orleans classic also has nachos, gumbo, tamales and other snacks on the menu, just in case you’re in the mood for something a little savory. Van’s Snowballs is open daily from 11:00 am to 7:30 pm and they are open 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm during winter hours.

Scuba Steve’s Snowballs

This stand, located at 2400 Barataria Blvd., has been a Marrero favorite for years. Here you will find a snowball made with the super fine ice that has become synonymous with the classic New Orleans snowball. Known best for their more outrageous flavors such as Toxic Waste (bubble gum and apple), Frog in a Blender (watermelon and lime), and Dinosaur Egg (mango and blueberry) that kids are sure to love, Scuba Steve’s doesn’t shy away from such classic flavors as Chocolate, Grape and Watermelon. Scuba Steve’s Snowballs is open 7 days a week from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm through October.

Buck’s Sno-Wiz

You’ll find this stand in the heart of Westwego at 133 Westbank Expressway. Originally owned by Buck himself, this stand has been delighting Westbank residents with their delicious snowballs for over 50 years. At this stand you will enjoy Buck’s twist on such classic flavors as Cream Cheese, Nectar, Pink Bubblegum and Wedding Cake. With the generous outdoor seating, you will want to stick around and enjoy your treat outside, on nicer days. Buck’s also offers a variety of soft serve ice cream as well as other goodies such as nachos and hot dogs. Buck’s Sno-Wiz is open 7 days a week from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Bayou Snowballs

Located at 1600 Belle Chasse Highway in Gretna, Bayou Snowballs seems to be a one-stop shop not only for snowballs, but for lunch or dinner as well. Not only does this stand boast such snowball flavors as Apple Pie, Red Hot, Silver Fox and Dreamsicle, but you can get a variety of sandwiches and snacks here. Along with your dessert, you can also treat yourself to a cheeseburger, a roast beef po boy, a club sandwich, a grilled chicken wrap and much more. Perfect for kids, Bayou Snowballs is open 7 days a week from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm.

Big Jake’s Snowballs

Pretty much everyone in Belle Chasse is familiar with Big Jake’s Sandwich Shop located at 203 Avenue G. Right next door, you will find Big Jake’s Snowballs serving Belle Chasse’s favorite snowball. What better way to cleanse your palate after enjoying a Big Jake Burger or po boy than with a sweet snowball. This stand offers such classic flavors such as Bubblegum, Cherry, Strawberry and Chocolate and also has a variety of ice cream, smoothies and sundaes on their menu. Big Jake’s Snowballs is open Monday through Friday from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

Sweet Shack Snowballs

This stand at 1716 Stumpf Blvd. is probably my favorite spot on the Westbank for snowballs. Not only do they offer delicious classics like Black Cherry, Green Apple, Coconut, and Cotton Candy, but they have a drive thru which makes it really convenient to stop in and grab a quick treat. My usual “go to” at snowball stands is the Rainbow flavor, which can be any combination of flavors and Sweet Shack always whips up a tasty version. Sweet Shack Snowballs is open 7 days a week from 11:00 am to 7:30 pm.

Abracadabra Snowballs

I recently discovered this stand at 1309 Lapalco Blvd. in Westwego, and they seem to offer a little bit of everything. Not only can you get delicious snowball flavors as Cotton Candy, Blue Hawaiian, Sour Cherry and more but they offer a wide variety of other treats such as nachos, hot dogs, ice cream, snow shakes, milk shakes and banana splits. One especially tasty offering is snowballs stuffed with goodies such as Oreos, ice cream, cheesecake and much more. Abracadabra Snowballs is open 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm, 7 days a week and is cash only.

Plum Street Snoballs

This stand, located at 1300 Burdette St. in New Orleans has been a neighborhood favorite since 1945. It seems that nearly everyone in New Orleans has been to this stand at least once to sample one of their yummy concoctions such as Red-Hot, Dreamsicle, Lemon-Lime, Strawberry Shortcake and much more. Plum Street Snoballs is open 7 days a week from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

This shop takes the classic snowball and puts a unique twist on it by stuffing it with cheesecake. Located at 8108 Hampson St. in New Orleans, I usually can’t go to this shop without getting a Tiffany’s Blue Box, which is sweet but not overpowering. Other flavors include Chantilly Cake, Oreo Cheesecake, Peanut Butter Cream and Key Lime Pie. Sno-La is open Tuesday through Friday 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Saturday and Sunday 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm. They are closed Mondays.
