Rosethorne Parade has History in Lafitte

The Krewe of Rosethorne is set to roll through Lafitte on February 10th, 2017. The Rosethorne Carnival Club has one of the deepest histories of the New Orleans area Mardi Gras parades.

The founders of the Krewe of Rosethorne are Mrs. Bernice Molina and the late Sarah Rock. It is believed that the parade originated at the Rosethorne Kindergarten School in 1965 and was organized by the Mother’s Club. The principal of the school originally granted permission for the club to have the parade and the original King and Queen were Eddie Guillie and Amy Molina, respectively. The offer was rescinded when the principal decided that she didn’t want the children parading in the road. She said that they were welcome to parade, but that it couldn’t be associated with the school’s Mother’s Club, thus the Rosethorne Carnival Club was born. The parade rolled from Camcraft Shipyard (now Simco, where the parade still starts) to Mitch Martin’s Welcome Inn, where they used the hall for their Krewe’s ball.

The roots of the parade run deep, and all of those involved in the parade have been a part of it their entire adult lives, and some since childhood. The President of the Rosethorne Carnival Club is Norman Martin, Sr. (retired 38 years 159th Air National Guard). He took over the club in 2004 and paraded in 2005 after the club hadn’t rolled in a few years. The Vice President is Norman Martin, Jr. (Electronic Technician 21 years). Club Treasurer is Brian Costigan (30 years and counting 159th Air National Guard). Club Secretary is Bonnie Costigan (retired 27 years 159th Air National Guard).

This year, Fisher High School’s homecoming King Colby Favalaro and homecoming Queen Maci Frickey will reign as King and Queen of Rosethorne.
