One Stone Café opens in Algiers Point

In these days of chain restaurants and coffee shops that seem to rush you out the door as soon as they shove a mass produced coffee into your hand, it’s nice when a neighborhood spot opens that is locally owned and welcoming to all who enter. Open since September, One Stone, located at 323 Verret St. in Algiers, is a neighborhood coffee shop and café that was desperately needed in the area and hopes to be a spot where families can spend time and enjoy a good meal.

I met with owner Carly Hammond and she filled me in on her vision and what she wants One Stone to be. The basic idea is that the shop will be an extension of Carly’s family living room. This wife and mom of an 8-year-old daughter, wanted a spot where folks could come and enjoy a cup of coffee and a bite to eat among friends. A New Orleans native, who also owns an art gallery and has experience in the restaurant industry, Carly hopes that her café will become a place where families are comfortable spending time. The space in the back is eventually going to be a game room that will be open to children and adults alike.

The name of the game at One Stone is good quality food that everybody can eat. Their coffee is sourced locally from Mojo Coffee House, and Coava from Portland is also served. The shop has begun serving dishes that are made from healthy homemade recipes, and meat and cheese boards, salads, soups, quiche, empanadas and other shared plates are making their way onto the menu. Carly is also proud to be able to offer vegan and gluten-free options for customers who may have some dietary restrictions. All meats, cheeses and sugar has been sourced locally and Carly hopes to continue this trend as her menu expands.

Opening One Stone wasn’t as easy as unlocking the door and moving in. As Carly describes it, the “bones” were there, but special additions were made in order to make One Stone home. The space was painted from top to bottom and the floor was sealed. The entire coffee bar area and countertop was redone and extended in order to add a welcoming space where customers can sit and enjoy their morning coffee, breakfast or lunch.

I have been to One Stone a few times myself and I have always enjoyed how welcoming and calming the space is. The coffee is delicious and I love the soft music that plays throughout the store as you sit and work or just relax.

One Stone is open Monday through Saturday 7:30 am to 2:00 pm. Hours will extend to Sunday and into the early evenings by February. One Stone can be reached at 405-0457.
