Summer Barbecue with LA 23 BBQ

In case you missed it, New Orleans has been in the middle of a bit of a barbecue “boom” as of late. Never before has the city boasted so many barbecue options and it seems that no matter what you crave, you are sure to find something delicious just around the corner. Not to be outdone, Belle Chasse has thrown their hat into the (smoke) ring with the addition of LA 23 BBQ.

Located at 9661 La. 23 in Belle Chasse, this road side stand has been serving up the good stuff since 2013 and underwent a recent expansion in order to better serve all of your smoked meat needs.

LA 23 BBQ was recently named one of the top 10 barbecue restaurants in the New Orleans area by and I knew had to make a trip over to this place to see what the fuss was all about. LA 23 BBQ is one of those perfect lunch spots where you just walk up to the window and order and the food comes out fairly quickly in a “go” box. You can take your food and enjoy it off site or you can dine on their covered patio and watch the world go by. On the afternoon that I was here, I chose the latter. I decided to get the 2 meats, 2 sides platter for $16 with brisket, jalapeño cheddar sausage, cole slaw and mac and cheese. Brisket has become a part of my regular order whenever I am trying a new barbecue place. In my experience, you can really tell how seriously a place takes their ‘que by how their brisket is prepared. LA 23 BBQ not only lived up to my expectations, but they surpassed them. The brisket was juicy and tender with just the right amount of that smoky flavor that you come to expect from good barbecue. The jalapeño cheddar sausage was tasty as well and being a fan of sausage, it’s hard to mess that up. The mac and cheese was gooey perfection, with cheese melted throughout and not just on top- this and the brisket won the gold medal for me. The cole slaw was not your typical mayonnaise based cole slaw, and if you aren’t normally a fan of the stuff, I encourage you to try their version. I found their slaw a lot lighter than others I have had.

Among other offerings on the menu at LA 23 BBQ are ribs, pulled pork and chicken. Pulled pork and brisket sandwiches are also on the menu. Meat can be ordered by the pound and whole rack or half rack ribs are available. Along with the 2 meat, 2 sides platter for $16 they also have the “Top Gun” which is a 3 meat, 2 sides platter for $20 that includes a free drink.

LA 23 BBQ is open Monday through Friday 10:00am to 2:00pm for lunch and Tuesday through Friday 4:30pm to 7:00pm for dinner. Delivery is also available. Call 657-3693 for more information.
